Traceability begins with identity
A pallet identifier links a physical handling unit to a digital record. That record needs a clear relationship to its contents, including batch or production context where required. A location alone cannot answer what was on the pallet.
Record the meaningful handovers
Identify the events that matter: receipt, production issue, return, storage and dispatch. For each event, define the pallet ID, event type, time, location and source. Label reuse and material reassignment need explicit rules.
Test an investigation
Choose a sample batch and ask the team to reconstruct its recorded journey. Check missing scans, split pallets and material changes. Report gaps explicitly; last-seen scan data does not establish continuous location.
Put this into practice
- Record pallet ID, contents, event, timestamp and location.
- Test label reuse and pallet splits.
- Reconstruct a batch journey and identify any missing events.
